Free Thermal Summary Utility Speeds Up Post-Processing

As users of Autodesk Simulation CFD and Autodesk Simulation Mechanical on a daily basis, we run into certain tasks that are repetitive or time-consuming.  For many of these situations, it can be beneficial to develop a script to increase proficiency.

One example is processing the temperatures for a large number of components,  which is typical for complex electronics assemblies.  Simulation CFD does automatically create a Component Thermal Summary (.cts) file in the scenario folder of the study.  Although this text file provides a convenient thermal analysis breakdown, the format is not spreadsheet friendly and tracking down values for many components can become tedious.



The solution was to develop a Python script to read the .cts file and reformat it.  Some of you may have used the online version of this utility that was available on our old website.  At this time, there are no plans to port that over to our new website, so it was decided to make this standalone executable version available to the public.

The interface allows the user to quickly sort and reverse sort the data by clicking on any of the column headers. CTM and LED materials are managed separately from other components and a comma-delimited (.csv) file can be exported for further processing or charting in Excel.

This utility has paid for the initial development efforts many times over and we hope you will find it just as useful.
